Why Alzheimer’s Awareness Matters to Families and Caregivers

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affect not only the individual diagnosed, but also the families and caregivers who walk alongside them.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2026 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, an estimated 7.4 million Americans age 65 and older are living with clinical Alzheimer’s dementia. The report also notes that nearly 13 million Americans provide unpaid care for a family member or friend with dementia.

For many families, caregiving is not a single task. It can involve helping with daily routines, managing appointments, coordinating care, supporting safety at home, navigating emotional changes, and making difficult decisions over time.

That is why events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s matter.

They create space for families to feel seen, supported, and connected to others who understand the journey.

Supporting Caregivers Starts With Showing Up

At Team Select Home Care, we understand that caregiving can be both deeply meaningful and incredibly demanding.

Families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other complex health needs often carry responsibilities that extend far beyond a typical day. They may become advocates, coordinators, companions, decision-makers, and hands-on caregivers all at once.

The Alzheimer’s Association reports that 59% of dementia caregivers experience high to very high emotional stress, highlighting how important community support, education, and connection can be for families navigating Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

By participating in the Porter County Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Team Select’s Valparaiso office hopes to meet families where they are, offer encouragement, and connect with community members who may be looking for support, resources, or simply a conversation with someone who understands the importance of care at home.
