If you are a parent, spouse, or other family member caring for someone with medical or developmental needs, you may be eligible to become their paid Home Health Aide. Recent changes to Indiana Medicaid waiver programs have affected when parents and spouses – known as Legally Responsible Individuals, or LRIs – can be paid to provide care. Team Select offers a comprehensive Home Health Aide training program that meets Indiana’s training requirements.

Care You Can Provide as a Home Health Aide

Home Health Aide services may include assistance with:

  • Bathing, dressing, and grooming

  • G-tube-related support within the HHA scope of practice

Home Health Aides cannot administer medications or perform services outside their authorized scope of practice. Your Team Select clinical team will explain which services may be provided under your loved one’s approved plan of care.

How to Get Started

Step 1:
Contact Team Select

Complete the form today or speak with a Team Select representative about your family’s needs and current coverage.

Step 2:
Complete a Clinical Intake

Our clinical team will evaluate your loved one’s needs and determine whether Home Health Aide services may be medically appropriate.

Step 3:
Enroll in HHA Training

Eligible caregivers complete Team Select’s 75-hour program, including online coursework and in-person clinical instruction.

Step 4:
Complete Certification and Employment Requirements

After training, you will complete the applicable certification, registry, orientation, and Team Select employment requirements.

These may include:

  • CPR certification
  • Background screening
  • Health and tuberculosis screening
  • Employment eligibility documentation
  • Team Select onboarding paperwork
  • Any additional state or payer requirements

Step 5:
Obtain Care Authorization

Team Select will work with the applicable insurance or Medicaid plan to request authorization for medically necessary HHA services.

Step 6:
Begin Providing Approved Care

Once all requirements and authorizations are complete, you can begin providing care under your loved one’s approved plan of care.

FAQ’s

Potentially. An eligible parent may complete the required Home Health Aide training and become a credentialed caregiver. Team Select will then evaluate the child’s care needs and work with the applicable insurance or Medicaid plan to seek authorization for HHA services.

Eligibility and payment are not automatic. They depend on medical necessity, coverage requirements, caregiver qualifications, and approved hours.

Under Indiana Medicaid, a Legally Responsible Individual, or LRI, generally includes the parent of a minor child or the spouse of a program participant. Special rules apply when an LRI is paid to provide certain Medicaid-funded services.

 

Indiana generally limits when parents and spouses can be paid as a are providers. A narrow exception may apply when a participant requires “extraordinary care,” such as tracheostomy care, continuous ventilator management, Total Parenteral Nutrition, or certain combinations of other complex nursing needs.

A waiver case manager or other appropriate state representative determines whether the extraordinary-care criteria are met.

 

Structured Family Caregiving is a Medicaid waiver service with its own eligibility rules, payment tiers, and documentation requirements.

A Home Health Aide is a trained caregiver who provides authorized services through a home health agency and within an established plan of care. The most appropriate option depends on the individual’s needs, coverage, and family circumstances.

 

The program includes 75 total hours of training:
