A Team Select Hero in Orlando

At Team Select Home Care, we believe every child we serve like the hero they are.

Luke is one of them.

Now 7 years old, Luke began receiving services through Team Select in 2018 (formerly Integrity Health Services) after an incredibly challenging start to life. What began as a full-term pregnancy at 38 weeks quickly turned into a medical emergency that would shape his early years.

A Challenging Beginning

During delivery, a severe infection was introduced, leading to life-threatening complications for both Luke and his mother, Mahalia. Luke was diagnosed with neonatal sepsis caused by Escherichia coli and bacterial meningitis at birth.

He spent 170 days in the NICU and ICU.

For his parents, Mahalia and Eric, those months were filled with uncertainty, strength, and unwavering love.

When Luke was finally discharged home, he required ongoing skilled nursing care. That’s when Team Select stepped in to continue supporting his needs in the comfort of home.

Private Duty Nursing at Home

Luke is serviced through Team Select’s Private Duty Nursing (PDN) program, which provides one-on-one skilled nursing care for medically fragile children in the comfort of their own homes.

Private Duty Nursing allows children with complex medical needs to receive consistent, individualized clinical support outside of a hospital setting. For Luke, that includes:

  1. Ongoing monitoring for seizure disorders
  2. Support related to his VP shunt and hydrocephalus
  3. G-tube management
  4. Coordination of care tailored to his unique needs

PDN is more than medical oversight, it creates stability. It allows children to grow up surrounded by family, routines, and familiar spaces.

In a full-circle moment, Luke’s mother, Mahalia (a registered nurse), recently began working with Team Select. Her professional background, combined with her lived experience as Luke’s caregiver, reflects the heart of pediatric home health: partnership, compassion, and advocacy.

Navigating Complex Medical Needs

Due to complications from his early infection, Luke developed a complex medical history that includes:

  1. Perinatal anoxic ischemic brain injury
  2. Hydrocephalus with VP shunt placement
  3. G-tube dependence
  4. Cerebral palsy
  5. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE)
  6. Seizure disorders

Children with medically fragile conditions require consistent, coordinated care; not only for medical stability, but to help them grow, develop, and most importantly; make progress at home.

And Luke continues to do just that.

Celebrating Luke’s Milestones

Despite significant medical challenges, Luke continues to make meaningful progress.

Today, he walks independently and can say a few words. He loves singing, watching television, and playing with his toys. His smile lights up any room, and he gives the biggest hugs.

Milestones look different for every child, but they matter deeply to the families who fight for them every day.

Luke’s strength and resilience remind us that progress is powerful, and home is often the best place to grow stronger.
