Meet Rowan! Rowan is an adorable and valued patient of Team Select who has been on service for a little over a month. As part of the Family LHA Program, his mother, Jordan, enjoys being his primary caregiver and having the ability to provide Rowan with a continuity of care with a lower risk of rehospitalization. Rowan and his family are a great example of the positive impact the Family LHA Program can have on medically complex families.
At four years old, Rowan appears to be a non-disabled child who plays with his friends, giggles with his siblings, and loves his family, but that wasn’t always the case.
Rowan was born at 25 weeks, but from the moment his family laid eyes on him, they knew he was a fighter. Jordan had an emergency c-section, and Rowan was born with severe IUGR (Intrauterine growth restriction) weighing only one pound. Due to the IUGR, Rowan’s brain is structurally different from other kiddos, and at birth, he was diagnosed with a Grade 4 brain bleed on the right side of his brain, underdeveloped lungs, and ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity).
“We were in the hospital for over six months, spending most of that, if not all, in the NICU,” said Jordan. “There were definitely moments where we feared for his progression and future, but day after day, Rowan kept amazing us.”
Rowan was born in 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic began here in the United States, and once it did, Rowan, along with thousands of children, was put in jeopardy due to a lack of continuous care and nursing shortage.
“The COVID-19 pandemic made it extremely difficult to manage appointments and caregivers, and during that time, my husband and I learned about what is nationally known as the Family CNA Program,” said Jordan. “I was previously a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), so I was exposed and aware to many of the care practices Rowan required, but when taking the LHA training with Team Select, it was nice to learn other perspectives.”
“Standing here today, I am extremely thankful for the Arizona Family LHA Program, and for all it has given our family,” said Jordan. “I am able to care for Rowan, spend time with my children, provide an income for my household, and be present for every appointment Rowan may have as part of his care plan. Thank you, Team Select!”
